Education Policy
In line with his overall policy approach of building on indigenous values and traditions, Mr Bandaranaike constructed his education reforms on two basic pillars. Firstly the student, who was to be assured food security through a nutritious mid-day meal and permitted to learn through the mother tongue, and secondly the teacher, who was to be empowered with adequate remuneration and comprehensive teacher training. One of his significant innovations in education was to enable the Buddhist monkhood the opportunity of expanding their knowledge base by raising the status of two leading existing pirivenas (colleges of education for monks) to University status.
